Traditional Reflexology is a treatment which involves a Therapist applying pressure to different parts of the hands or feet with their hands, but mostly their thumbs. It is based on the idea that the different zones/parts on a foot or hand connect and correspond with different body parts and organs. Reflexology is known as a Chinese treatment but actually dates back over 5,000 years ago to the Egyptians and Indians. An ear, nose and throat surgeon named Dr William Fitzgerald was the founder of Zone Therapy, which is what it was called before Reflexology. The modern version that we use today was brought to light by a physiotherapist called Eunice Ingham and it is her who developed the map of the entire body on the feet which all Reflexologists use to this day. Eunice found that by using acupressure or massage techniques on the different zones of the foot, there were positive effects to their corresponding body parts. Reflexology is practised by both medical and non medical practitioners because there has been so much study and research that has shown positive results. There have been many variations of Reflexology over the years but I practice the Thai version. The reason why I love their method is because the whole of the foot is worked upon by using pressure with a massage stick. Massage with the hands and thumbs is then incorporated into the routine. In my opinion by using the stick instead of just the thumbs you are able to add pressure, pinpoint zones, work on the foot in depth by using different techniques and to be honest I find it much more enjoyable and it offers something different to normal Reflexology. I also offer the option of adding hot stones to the treatment which allows for an even deeper massage. So the benefits of Reflexology are Relaxation Increased blood circulation Improved nerve function Cleanses and detoxifies the body Eases headaches and migraines Balances energy and the Chakras Reduces stress and tension Promotes muscle relaxation Calms and soothes Provides comfort Gives pain relief and so much more...
