what is a lymphatic drainage massage?

The Lymphatic system has been recognised since Ancient times with early physicians documenting therapies for swollen lymph nodes. The lymphatic system was known as 'the body's hidden rivers'. In the 17th century lacteal vessels and the flow of lymph fluid was discovered and studied, it was then that the lymphatic system was established as a distinct entity within the human body.

In the 1930's a Danish man named Dr Emil Vodder studied and developed technique known as 'Manual Lymph Drainage MLD) whilst working with people in France who were suffering with congested lymph nodes. He observed that gentle, manual pressure could move the lymph fluid and reduce swelling. This gained recognition in the 1960's leading to the establishment of training programmes for MLD.

The lymphatic system study and treatment has continued to evolve by doctors and professors over the years. Thanks to all of these studies we now know more about the lymphatic network and understand the importance of keeping lymph fluid flowing. Lymph fluid contains proteins, salts and white blood cells which contribute to your body's natural lymphatic cleansing network.

One of the ways to keep your body's natural cleansing network functioning as it should is to have a lymphatic drainage massage. This involves a therapist using light, gentle movements with the hands and special tools especially developed for this practice. These movements stimulate the system promoting a healthy flow of lymph fluid. Some of the benefits of having a lymphatic drainage massage are

improved circulation
helps with surgery recovery
reduces swelling
eases water retention
filters out toxins
strengthens the immune system
improves skin appearance and reduces puffiness
promotes relaxation and stress relief
...and much more

Like all holistic therapies the benefits are endless. A lymphatic drainage massage at Bliss is a wonderful way to promote natural healing around the body and to relax the mind, body and soul.
