what is acupuncture?

WARNING THIS BLOG CONTAINS PHOTOS OF NEEDLES BEING INSERTED INTO THE BODY

Acupuncture is an ancient form of healing which originated in China and is classed as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is well known and is one of the most effective holistic treatments to have. It is also offered in some cases through the NHS but most people prefer to go to a private Acupuncturist.

We have many energy lines running through our body called meridians and it is important for them to flow freely for the mind, body and spirit to be balanced. There are also points on the body which correspond to different organs and systems which if stimulated or massaged can help with the flow of energy.

During Acupuncture fine needles are placed into specific points of the body (called acupuncture points) where there is  need for treatment such as for pain.  The insertion of the needles stimulate the nervous system promoting the release of natural pain relieving chemicals such as endorphins.

The fact that this treatment is sometimes provided by the NHS means that holistic, natural and ancient forms of healing are beginning to be seriously considered as a complementary therapy to medical treatment. I don't ever tell people that a complementary treatment will heal them but I always say that both holistic and medical treatments can work brilliantly together.

Even though the needles are very fine you can expect to feel maybe a pinch, sting or ache as they are inserted. You should not be in any pain or feel too uncomfortable so it is important to let your practitioner know if this is the case.
